We took a field trip to Dallas today. Roy had an appointment at the Liver Consultants. His labs were better this past week so it was just a check-up. He still has a little bit of puffiness on his legs. Because he’s been losing weight so quickly (on purpose to remove the water weight and he’s dropped about 50 pounds so far), he’s going to start taking half of the current dose of the diuretics. If he starts to itch, get confused, or retain water, we were instructed to call the office for them to reevaluate the change in his medications.

As usual, Roy is proving to be a medical conundrum. Today’s practitioner stated that she had not encountered a disappearing left liver lobe before. She also noted that some of his symptoms indicated cirrhosis but other key indicators of cirrhosis are missing (no enlargement of his spleen, no encephalopathy, etcetera), so the underlying liver issue is not yet clear. She will be discussing these things with Dr. Asrani so maybe we will learn eventually what made the left lobe disappear and the right lobe to shrink. The biopsy is on hold for now.

Roy will see Dr. Sterling next week for a follow-up and will have another set of lab work done the week after. The next Dallas follow-up will be in mid-April.

Goodness. I bet it’s difficult not knowing! But I’m soooo glad to hear about each improvement. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do to help!

I am working on being comfortable with the not knowing – and this probably is going to be a challenge for me as there is not a clear “okay now this” point from which to begin next steps
